Living Things

Junior infants are exploring the theme of the farm. The children are enjoying the Farmers Market role play area, using play dough to make farm related objects and playing with animals and tractors in our small world area. πŸšœπŸ„

πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ It was all hands on deck for 5th & 6th class during the week as we set about preparing our garden for the coming winter and spring. Our first job was to harvest onions which we planted back in April. πŸ§…
Secondly we prepared the soil and planted some spring bulbs (daffodils and grape hyacinths) around our crab apple trees for some vibrant yellow and blue spring colours.
Finally we planted up two large pots with tulips and daffodils in a method called lasagne planting (planting layers of bulbs, just like making lasagne) which will hopefully ensure a succession of colourful spring flowers; daffodils later followed by tulips. 🌷 And for some instant winter interest we added colourful pansies to the top layer.
πŸ₯• Junior infants are taking part in the Incredible Edibles programme and will be learning all about the importance of healthy eating and how to grow some fruit and vegetables. We began today by planting strawberries, lettuce, spinach and chives! πŸ…

Energy and Forces

Β Always question, always wonder – Scientists at work in Rang a 3! πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬
We explored how the density of liquids affects flotation and also investigated the theories of force and gravity by doing the ‘Water will not spill experiment’!

3rd & 4th class created paper helicopters and trialled and tested their designs! 🚁

Materials

As part of our science lesson today in Junior Infants we made butter using simple household ingredients: cream, salt and a glass jar. We enjoyed tasting it on crackers too! πŸ˜‹

πŸ§ͺ 6th Class enjoyed learning about non-Newtonian fluids. We created our own fluid by mixing cornflour and water. A non-Newtonian fluid behaves like a solid but is a liquid. πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬
πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ Ready Steady Cook! πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ 3rd class used procedural reading today to cook tasty frittatas πŸ˜‹πŸ‘
πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬ Science Week in 5th Class! We investigated acids & bases using our red cabbage indicator. We made ‘Balloon Skewers’ and we even managed to help our friends in 1st class ‘Walk on Air’. πŸ§ͺπŸ‘¨β€πŸ”¬
Senior Infants enjoyed making and flipping pancakes!

Environmental Awareness and Care

‘Build it and they will come!’ πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ A big thank you and much appreciation to Green-Schools Ireland for our brand new Bike Shelter which was installed earlier today! The shelter can cater for 20 bicycles and the total cost of it was grant funded as a result of a successful application to An Taisce.
Our Green Schools theme for this year is Global Citizenship – Travel. The ultimate aim of the theme is to increase the amount of students walking, cycling, scooting, taking the bus or carpooling to school.
A Scooting Workshop will take place tomorrow Thursday 30th March for Junior and Senior Infants with our local Green Schools Travel Officer. The children will learn some scooting skills and play games on their scooters.

Science Activities

Science Week 2022

πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬ Science Week 2022 over and out! πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”¬
It was a great week for all in 1st Class, filled with lots of exploring, experimenting and fun. Experiments included testing the effect of air pressure in a bottle of water with holes, growing gummy bears, launching a balloon rocket and finally our friends in 5th Class helped out with a balancing challenge on an upturned desk supported by balloons.
πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬ Science Week! πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”¬
4th class enjoyed making lava lamps this week!
